Washington, 4 November (IranVNC)—The first Catholic-Muslim forum was launched today in Rome as senior Vatican and Islamic scholars met with the intention of improving relations between the world’s two predominant religions, Reuters reports.
The meetings will be attended by 24 senior officials from each religion with the Grand Mufti of Bosnia Mustafa Ceric leading the Muslim side and Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, leading the Catholics, the BBC reports.
The talks, which will be held for three days, are aimed a diffusing inter-faith tension that escalated after a speech by Pope Benedict XVI in 2006, that some thought implied that Islam was violent and irrational.
After the speech, Muslim scholars sought to improve Christian-Muslin dialogue and issued a manifesto entitled “A Common World”, in which they asserted that both religions share the core principles of love of God and neighbor.
The delegation will hold a series of lectures delivered by members of each faith, and the group is expected to have an audience with the Pope on Thursday.
