A Common Word has had a profound effect on interfaith relation. Over the past few years more and more research has gone into its theological underpinning and its transformative effects. Here are a number of books, journals, and articles that have been published about it.

Over the course of these five years a number of academic books and journal articles have been written about the ACW. : H.R.H. Prince Ghazi, Prof. Miroslav Volf and Merissa Yarrington edited a book on it for Eerdmans; another book was prepared by Professor Walid Ansary for Palgrave-Macmillan (to be released in 2010); Georgetown University’s Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding published an Occasional Paper on it entitled ‘A Common Word and the Future of Christian-Muslim Relations’; the journal Sophia in Washington DC dedicated an issue to it, as did the Beirut Theological Seminary; and in Jordan the Royal Aal Al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought issued a ‘White Paper’ booklet of all its most important texts.

A Common Word was launched on October 13th 2007 as an open letter signed by 138 leading Muslim scholars and intellectuals to the leaders of the Christian Churches and denominations all over the world, including H.H. Pope Benedict XVI. In essence, it proposes that Islam and Christianity share at their core, the twin “golden” commandments of the paramount importance of loving God and loving the neighbor. Based on this joint common ground, it is presented here as an interfaith theological document which calls for peace and harmony between Christians and Muslims worldwide.

“A common word between us and you”: observations on the (mis)uses of Koranic exegesis in interreligious dialogue. Paper presented at the 42nd Annual Meeting of the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA), Washington, D.C., 22-25.

ACW has also become the subject of a number of M.A. and M. Phil. dissertations in Western universities in various countries (including at Harvard University; the Theological Seminary at the University of Tübingen, Germany, and the Center for Studies of Islam in the UK), and it was studied also in various international interfaith conferences and gatherings including the World Economic Forum in Spring 2008.
